      <image:title>Our Research</image:title>
<image:caption>We have recently solved the structure of the human recombinant cardiac ryanodine receptor calcium release channel (RyR2) using cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) at ~2.5 Å (by Marco Miotto et al, manuscript in preparation). Here are shown (upper panel) a top down view, and (lower panel) a side view of the channel in the closed state. The mushroom shaped channel is comprised of an enormous cytoplasmic domain seated on a transmembrane stalk. Solving the atomic resolution structure of the RyR channels has enabled us to identify binding sites for key regulators of channel function, locate disease causing mutations, define the molecular interactions between the channel and its multiple subunits and binding partners, and locate drug binding sites.</image:caption>
